A visit to Scotland would not be complete without sampling a dram of the national drink and there is no better place to do this than a local distillery. You can also enjoy a trip to the historic Rosslyn Chapel in the Lothians.
Climb aboard a bus tour or hire a chauffeur for the day to head just outside the city of Edinburgh where you will discover Glenkinchie Distillery. Once there, you have the chance to enjoy the Old Malting Floors, which contains an informative exhibition and display of a model distillery.
A guide will take you on a journey of discovery through the production area of the distillery so that you can learn more about how the distinctive ingredients come together to form the whisky.
Round things off with a dram of Glenkinchie 12 Year Old Single Malt Whisky. Produced in East Lothian, just 20 minutes from the capital, the drink is fondly known as ‘The Edinburgh Malt’.
Many trips also incorporate a visit to Roslin Glen where you will be enthralled by the beautiful architecture at Rosslyn Chapel. This 15th century chapel boasts ornate stonework and wonderful carvings which have long interested artists and architects. Identify the various carvings from the ‘Knight on horseback’ to the fallen angel Lucifer bound by rope as you explore.
Rosslyn has survived turbulent times and many different kinds of craftsmen would have worked to build the structure from masons to carpenters and quarriers. Today it is famed for the role it plays in Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code.
It is well worth taking a day trip to the Lothians and beyond whether you choose to do this with a private chauffeur or prefer to go on an organised bus excursion.
