Explore a hidden side of the capital to see Edinburgh’s urban wildlife, from otters and badgers to rare birds.

There is a hidden and unexpected side to Scotland’s capital. Behind the classical buildings and beyond the hustle and bustle, green spaces are spread through the wonderful city of Edinburgh that not only offer a pleasant escape but are also home to an array of wildlife. As the city goes about its business, unbeknown to many residents and visitors, you can see wildlife from badgers to otters and rare birds in beautiful places right in the heart of Edinburgh.

A network of footpaths takes you around the city and the best places to see urban wildlife. Follow the path alongside the Water of Leith, which flows all the way from Balerno on the south-west edge of the city, to the Shore at Leith. This scenic waterway is home to dippers, grey wagtails and even otters. Try a walk early in the morning or in the evening for the best chance of seeing these lovely creatures.

In the west of Edinburgh, Corstorphine Hill is a natural oasis that is home to deer, foxes, squirrels and even badgers, which you can see on special guided tours. Holyrood Park also offers a dramatic getaway from the city that is home to wildlife such as ravens, buzzards, sparrowhawks and cute but predatory stoats. Climb up Arthur’s Seat for a chance of seeing snow buntings in winter, or take a walk around Duddingston Loch to see a variety of birds including grey herons, which nest in a colony on specially constructed platforms in the trees by the loch.

What’s more, being in the city you are never far away from a lovely pub, café or restaurant where you can stop and refuel, or hopefully, celebrate seeing that otter!
