the National Portrait Gallery
Edinburgh has a collection of fantastic art galleries which feature fine and modern art, portraits and contemporary work. Look out for pieces by Raphael, Monet, Picasso and other great artists from the early Renaissance to the modern day.
National Galleries of Scotland
The National Galleries of Scotland is housed in four galleries across Edinburgh and boasts a collection of Scottish and international art which is among the best in the world.
National Gallery Complex
For lovers of fine art, the place to head for is the National Gallery Complex on Princes Street. This building houses a superb collection covering ages from the early Renaissance to the late 19th century period. Look out for masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, El Greco, Velázquez, Rembrandt and Rubens to Van Gogh, Monet and Cézanne.
Royal Scottish Academy
The Royal Scottish Academy is also part of the Complex on Princes Street and features a changing programme of temporary exhibitions which in the past have included works by Andy Warhol amongst many others.
Scottish National Portrait Gallery
December will see the reopening of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh after a fantastic reinvention.
The world’s first purpose-built National Portrait Gallery is housed in a stunning Victorian Gothic building, and visitors will see a host of portraiture exhibitions covering subjects from the Great War to modern photography.
The reopened gallery will include more gallery space than before, allowing it to showcase more fantastic works of art and introduce an exciting new display programme.
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art One and Two
Modern art lovers should visit the National Gallery of Modern Art One and Two, two buildings a short and pleasant walk from the city centre. Displays here include Cubist and Expressionist paintings, with special highlights being works by Matisse and Picasso. During your time at the galleries, explore the delightful grounds which continue the art theme into the great outdoors - a joy in the autumn.
Previously the Dean Gallery, Modern Art Two houses world-class collections of Dada and Surrealism including important works by Dalí, Miró, Ernst, Magritte and Picasso.
Each of the galleries has a superb café – the ideal place to take a break for a coffee or a light lunch, before continuing to explore the masterpieces and thought provoking artworks displayed in each location.
Both galleries also have a well-stocked shop offering treasure troves of arts related books, cards, gifts and souvenirs, largely reflecting the individual gallery’s own collection.
Fruitmarket Gallery
For another contemporary art fix, try the Fruitmarket Gallery at the back of Waverley Station in the city centre. This used to be a Victorian fruit and vegetable market and is now one of the leading exhibition spaces for contemporary art in Edinburgh.
Enjoy emerging and established Scottish artists placed in an international context. There are also talks and workshops, screenings of short films, and a busy café where you can hang out with an eclectic arty crowd.
