Murrayfield, the home of Scottish rugby
Edinburgh’s international rugby weekends bring the city to life with thousands of visiting fans mixing with local rugby followers, creating an unrivalled blend of camaraderie and friendly banter.
Edinburgh boasts a proud rugby heritage with international rugby dating back to 1871 when Scotland beat England in the inaugural match between the great rivals on Scottish soil, at Raeburn Place in Stockbridge. This rivalry is of course still going strong today and creates a great atmosphere when the teams go up against each other every year for the Calcutta Cup.
International matches are played at the home of Scottish rugby, Murrayfield, in the west of the city. This grand stadium, boasting a seated capacity of 67,800, is easily accessible on foot or by bus from the city centre.
Every year it hosts Scotland’s home games in the RBS 6 Nations Championship. In the 2012 competition, Scotland play at home against England on Saturday 4 February and France on Sunday 26 February - or why not take a look at the full 6 Nations fixture list.
As well as 6 Nations matches, Murrayfield hosts Scotland games against other countries, from South Africa to Samoa, in a regular series of summer internationals. In 2011 this took the form of two World Cup warm-up matches, against Ireland and Italy.
Another big international rugby event played at Murrayfield is the Edinburgh 7s - the Scottish finale of the IRB Sevens - a series of international rugby union sevens tournaments played around the world.
