Route Summary
This is a suggested route for getting from central Edinburgh to Longniddry to join the Beaches and Castles Cycle Route. Other alternatives are to catch a train or of course drive if you have a car.
Route Description
This route goes via Musselburgh. The first section to Musselburgh follows part of the National Cycle Network Route 1. The second section is a coastal route on ordinary roads going via Port Seton
Start in The Meadows park in Edinburgh. There is an ornamental cast iron Cycle Network sign in the middle of the park at the major footpath junction. Cycle east from that, buildings on your left, park on the right. Follow Route 1 cycle signs.
You leave the park by a blue police box which is now a coffee stall. Turn left on to Buccleuch Street, then after 50 metres right through Gifford Park. Cross Clerk Street to Rankeillor Street then cross St Leonard's Street to St Leonard's Lane by a Police Station. Turn right on to the Innocent Railway Cycle Path by the Engine Shed Cafe.
The cycle route leads through a housing estate then through a tunnel. Follow it for three miles crossing Duddingston Road West then Duddingston Park South. The path becomes a dirt surface. Continue east going through an underpass, cross a car park then a railway line. Follow the cyclepath on the other side by the Brunstane Burn (do not cross the burn). You leave the National Cycle Network at this point.
The Brunstane Burn cycle path emerges on to the A199 near the sea where you turn right. You have to cycle on this for a little way to get to Musselburgh. When you cross the River Esk however do not turn left into Musselburgh High Street but carry on over into Dalrymple Loan. Take the third left into Inveresk Road then continue straight on into Pinkie Road. This ends at a roundabout, from there follow the B1348 (Ravenshaugh Road) for three miles by the sea to Port Seton.
Continue on through Port Seton passing the power station still keeping by the sea. A kilometre after the power station, you pass a supermarket and see the sea again in front of you, turn right up Fishers Road. If you pass a caravan park you have missed the turning!
After a further kilometer turn left on to the A198. This becomes a dual carriageway with a poor cycle path. Look right for a railway level-crossing, cross the road and the railway, then continue in the same direction to join the route just south of Longniddry.
