What better way to explore the city of Edinburgh than by getting on your bike? Avoid traffic jams and enjoy the fresh air as you take a look around the city’s beautiful architecture, scenery and attractions.

Cycle Paths

Edinburgh City Council has compiled some very useful information about cycling in Edinburgh including an extensive set of Explore Edinburgh by Bike leaflets. The guides cover the whole of Edinburgh, area by area, detailing bike-safe routes and cycle paths as well as great ideas for attractions to explore as you cycle. You can download copies of the area maps or you can order them directly from the Council (0800 232323 / clarence@edinburgh.gov.uk).

Cycle routes

You can use the fantastic Cyclestreets website to plan your own routes around Edinburgh - simply put in your start and end points and Cyclestreet’s journey planner will suggest safe and traffic-light routes that you can take through the city. You can also access this useful resource via a free iPhone and Android app.

Edinburgh City Council also has Explore Edinburgh car-free leaflets available to download online which include maps and information on some of the city’s most popular cycle routes. Cycle tours

For a more relaxed cycling experience of Edinburgh why not take a bike tour? The experienced guides with tell you all there is to know about the area with interesting facts and stories along the way. Cycle cafe

After a hard day’s cycling enjoy some refreshment in the unique Ronde cycle cafe in Stockbridge. The cafe is a cyclist’s haven with a collection of bike artwork, books, magazines and film as well as a shop selling a large selection of bikes and accessories and a state-of-the-art workshop with a team of bike mechanics offering expert repair and upgrade services as well as knowledgeable advice.
