children cycling in Vogrie Country Park, Midlothian
If you love cycling but don’t have the means to bring your bike with you or if you fancy a new way to explore Edinburgh and the Lothians, hiring a bike once you arrive is the best and easiest option for you. With dedicated cycle shops throughout the region that specialise in top-quality bikes it couldn’t be easier to go on an exciting cycle adventure.
Biketrax is a popular cycle shop just 10 minutes from Prince’s Street in Tollcross that offer bikes to suit all your road and urban cycling needs. They hire out their City (Hybrid) style of bikes, Brompton Folding Bikes and Trek Road Bikes for less than £20 a day. Included in the cost is an emergency repair kit, helmet and a lock and if you are particular about your own pedals the shop can even fit them for you before you set off.
Leith Cycle Company is another great option with shops on Leith Walk and in the Abbey Hill area of the city. They hire out Dawes touring bikes complete with pannier racks so they are ideal for longer trips - you can also hire pannier bags for your luggage if you don’t own your own for a small extra charge. All bikes come with repair kits and locks and the company offers many different hire packages to suit your needs. Travelling with children? No problem - Leith Cycle Company hire children’s bikes as well as children’s trailers and tagalongs if they are not confident cyclists.
If you are looking to cycle in the Lothians you can hire bikes once you get there rather than cycle from Edinburgh if you prefer. Law Cycles hire bikes from as little at £10 for half a day and their standard hire cycles are Giant Escape Hybrid models. Make sure you book at least 24 hours ahead, however, to ensure you have bikes for your trip.
