Immerse yourself in the vibrant and influential works of John Duncan Fergusson (1874-1961). The exhibition will show around 70 paintings covering Fergusson's entire career, including many rarely-seen works from public and private collections.
Born in Leith, Fergusson was self-taught apart from short-term enrolments at painting academies in Edinburgh and Paris. He returned repeatedly to Paris, sometimes with Peploe with whom he painted in the South and North West of France, before moving to Paris in 1907. More than any of his Scottish contemporaries, Fergusson assimilated and developed the latest developments in French painting.
In 1940, Fergusson and his wife, Margaret Morris, moved to Glasgow where they galvanised the arts scene, and were founder members of the meeting and exhibiting society, the New Art Club, and of its off-shoot the New Scottish Group.
